Queer Muslim Talk: Language, Sexuality, and Religion in an Inclusive Muslim Community of Practice

Speaker(s) / Presenter(s):
Dr. Katrina Thompson

This presentation presents discourse data from talk-in-interaction and online discussions collected over three years of multi-sited ethnographic (and ‘netnographic’) fieldwork in progressive Muslim communities of practice in North America and online. Addressing both communicative and embodied practices, Dr. Thompson argues that participants are engaged in performatively “queering” Muslim religious practices, thereby establishing communities inclusive of LGBT and other marginalized Muslims.
